Anniversary Committee History
About Us and How We Got Started
The California State Park Anniversary Committee started life as the 125th Ranger Anniversary Committee in 1990. The Ranger Anniversary Committee was formed to organize, promote and celebrate the 125th anniversary of the appointment in 1866 of the first state park ranger Galen Clark.
The Ranger 125th Anniversary took place in 1991. It was a year of events, displays, articles, and publicizing, culminated by a major conference, all of which highlighted the "Year of the Ranger." Many projects regarding the anniversary were undertaken. These included a "day-in-the-life" photo contest, a special U.S. Postal stamp cancellation, a free day for the public in the original parks, and a professionally produced 30 minute ranger history film. Additionally, many ranger artifacts, old and new, were collected and a large photograph and slide library was established. Finally, enough donations were gathered to fund publication of a book on the history of California state park rangers.
The main committee was made up of Mike Lynch, Susan Ross and Bill Monaghan, with John Cleary as Treasurer and many others serving in a variety of functions for the anniversary effort.
After 1991 and the publishing of a book on Rangers in 1995, the committee continued and promoted the 150th State Anniversary in 2000, the Lifeguard 50th Anniversary in 2000, the Off-Highway Recreation 35-Year Anniversary in 2006, and the K-9 Program Anniversary in 2009.
In 2010, the 125th Anniversary Committee merged with the California State Parks Anniversary Committee (CSPAC). CSPAC sponsored the Firearms Program 40th Anniversary in 2011 and is now one of the primary promoters and sponsors of the 2014 California State Parks 150th Anniversary.
The current CSPAC Committee is made up of Mike Lynch, Scott Liske, Brian Robertson, Susan Ross and manager Donna Howell.
